I will be going to my first in-person academic con I will be going to my first in-person academic conference in a few weeks and then another one a few weeks after that. I have one poster and three oral presentations to deliver.

I’m quite nervous about it, so I asked you guys for help and you came through. 👏🏼

Since I believe there are many others in the same boat as I am, I decided to combine some of the best advice in this post. ☺️

❓Do you have anything to add to it?
Happy weekend everyone 🥰 I don’t know if it’s the end of semester or blooming flowers - I’m feeling a little better these days. Going to ride this high as long as it lasts. 😅

❓Any fun weekend plans?
I can’t believe that I’m finishing the third y I can’t believe that I’m finishing the third year of my PhD and I’m about to become a 4th year PhD candidate. 😳🤯 2 more years to go (if everything goes well bc 5 years is the average time to graduation in my lab). 🤞🏻

And, I must say that even though my workload has not been as bad as during my second year, third year has been THE hardest year in my PhD so far. I ask myself existential questions on a daily basis now. 😅 I hope I can make it to the end.

❓What year are you in?

Lowlights:
🌧 I’m starting with lowlights, because these past weeks have been some of the hardest of my PhD. Not because of the workload, but because I’ve lost my motivation to pursue this degree. It’s been hard, really really hard, to force myself to get work done and I can’t wait for this to be over. Taking it a day at a time.

Highlights:
☀️Hard to think of highlights for this week. I finished coursework, which is good I suppose.
☀️The weather has been beautiful and so have all the blooming trees.
☀️I’ve been making plans for my trip back home this summer, which cheers me up a bit.

I recruited folks from my Instagram, and managed to get a racially and geographically diverse group of PhD students from all across the country - from Hawaii to Florida. We also had diversity in terms of PhD fields - from biochemistry and engineering to business and anthropology. The participants were between years 1-4 of their PhD program.

The interview lasted for 1.5 hours and we had a very active and open conversation. I was very lucky to recruit such an insightful group of students.

PS. Everyone agreed ahead of the interview that I can share the results (without identifying information) on my Instagram. ☺️
