I was inspired by @aoc breaking stereotypes challenge and all the amazing female researchers/scientists on this platform, and decided to recreate this photo as well.⁣

I really love it because it makes you think about the “labels” you want to be associated with. Sharing some of these with the world can be difficult but there is certainly power in doing so. ⁣

Our challenges make us unique. Be unapologetically you. ⁣

I wrote about impostor syndrome and its symptoms some time back and I figured that it would also be helpful to share some concrete steps for how to battle it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
➡️ 1. Stop trying to figure out what other people think of you. You really don’t know what others think of you. Also, the feedback on your academic work reflects on your work, not on you as a person.⁣⁣
⁣
➡️ 2. Share what you’re feeling with trusted colleagues or mentors. You might just realize that others have been in this position as well, which can make it less scary.⁣⁣
⁣
➡️ 3. Read successful people’s biographies. Again, you’d be surprised about how many of them have thought of themselves as impostors. ⁣
⁣⁣
➡️ 4. Being less critical of others can help you be softer towards yourself as well.⁣⁣
⁣
➡️ 5. Accept that you have had some role in your success. Yes, everyone is born with different opportunities and perhaps you were luckier than some other people, but you did say yes when you could have said no. ⁣⁣
⁣
➡️ 6. Consider keeping a file/diary of all the nice things people have said about you. When you feel down, you can just go back to the file and see how many people you’ve helped and inspired.⁣⁣
⁣
➡️ 7. Realize that you are constantly changing. Did you learn to use this new programming language that you had no clue about before, do you have more content knowledge about an area you did not know much about? You’re growing into something better, you’re learning. It’s a process and we’ll never be a “ready” product.⁣⁣

💛 “The biggest challenge about doing a PhD is not doing research but managing your mental health.” 💛⁣

This is what a young Professor told me just recently. And you know what, I’m starting to see why that’s the case.⁣
⁣
Some would think that since we are PhD STUDENTS, we would have a nice chill summer, but the reality is that we can be working even harder. I am currently working on three different fast-paced research projects, and I have deadlines and deliverables for all three this week. So, I have been working nonstop, including the weekends and evenings, some days until 1am. ⁣
⁣
Doesn’t sound like a relaxing summer, does it? 🙅🏼‍♀️ So, instead of working myself crazy and starting the fall semester already exhausted, I have decided to set aside a few days a week to just rest and enjoy the summer. ⁣
⁣
I will be working long days most days, but on one or two days of the week I won’t be doing any work. Instead, I will go to the beach, discover Boston, or take a day trip to one of the neighboring New England states. Balance and healthy work-life boundaries are key. 💛⁣

Truth be told, growing up I didn’t understand the power of female friendships and role models. I wanted to hang out with guys and I thought that I’m “not like other girls”. How cliché, I know.⁣
⁣
However, I have grown to see the beauty of female friendships and female mentorship. I have started actively seeking and cherishing these relationships, both in and outside of academia. ⁣
⁣
Now, I try to do my best to raise other women up, fix their crown without telling the world that it was crooked, and clap when I see women being successful because their success is not my failure. ⁣
⁣
Empowered women empower women. 🙌🏼⁣

I actually moved to the U.S. on July 4th, 2018, so it’s very easy to remember and celebrate. 😀 I still miss Europe and love it so much, but I am grateful to do my PhD in this outstanding country. ⁣⁣

It’s really easy to focus on all the negative when thinking about the U.S., especially considering the rollercoaster events that have taken place this year. However, I’ll make an effort to talk about the things that I love about the U.S.: ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
🇺🇸 I love the diversity of people in this country. Let’s celebrate and protect it.⁣⁣
🇺🇸 I love the competitiveness. ⁣⁣
🇺🇸 I love the music and movies that this country creates.⁣⁣
🇺🇸 I love the innovation and how it attracts some of the most brilliant people from across the world. ⁣
🇺🇸 I love the diversity of scenery - from skyscrapers and concrete jungle to small towns and to some of the most majestic national parks in the world. ⁣⁣
🇺🇸 I love the grassroots activism, passion, and willingness to fight for one’s beliefs. ⁣⁣

Keep calm and wear a mask. 😷

Last week’s editorial in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) reviewed the latest science and reconfirmed that face coverings are one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in communities.

Masks will likely be a part of our life for some time. So, while we’re doing our share to flatten the curve and protect the community, why not do it in style? 💁🏼‍♀️

@visodesigns sent me a couple of their beautiful and colorful masks to try. All of their masks have adjustable straps, making it comfortable to wear. You can also add replaceable filters. Go check them out!

Hello friends, I’m back! ⁣
⁣
I can’t believe it’s been three weeks since I last posted on Instagram. This was officially the longest break I’ve taken from social media. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
However, it was necessary and so worth it! I managed to work through some difficult things in my life and really live day by day without worrying about planning out my Instagram feed and putting on a show.⁣
⁣⁣
There’s still a long health and wellness journey ahead of me, but this time away gave me much-needed restart. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Thank you to everyone who didn’t bail on me and unfollow while I was gone, haha. ❤️ ⁣
