Egypt: How I Rescued and Adopted a Street Cat

So everyone who knows me knows I have a big heart for animals…

And everyone who has been following me, has read from the previous post and from the latest FB post about the sad situation of animals in Egypt. So I suppose it was just a matter of time until I could not ignore the situation anymore and wanted to practically help one of these poor animals.

So meet Rey. Rey’s name is inspired from the Star Wars character Rey who also wandered on the desert alone without her family. I found her in the yard of a Chinese restaurant. She was asking for affection and when I went to pet her, I literally felt all the bones on her back. She looked really ragged and sad.

I went to ask the Chinese restaurant people whether this cat is theirs. They said that she lives there. There is no way that she actually lives there. They probably meant that she just comes around every now and then. She was malnourished, sick and looked really depressed. It was obvious she did not have an owner and a loving home. So I said whatever, grabbed her into my lap and took her home.

Rey on the first day at her new home

Ever since she arrived at my place, she has looked for so much affection, love and care. She always follows me around, even when I go take a shower and tells me stories when she sees me (in her meow-language). The first night she was crying when I put her to another room. I simply could not sleep because she tried to curl up next to me on every occasion, making it impossible for me to get a good night rest. Also, she was super dirty and I was worried that she has probably a couple of diseases and maybe some bugs with her.

First evening and her skin diseases 🙁

So we have been to the vet many times already, for shots and just check-ups. Have to say thanks for Khaled for helping me to get around with her at first. Turns out that I was right, she was in a really bad condition. Her immune system was down, she had ringworms, bad stomach issues, probably worms and other issues. And she was so stressed from the visit to the vet that she got diarrhoea and just pooped all over me in the middle of the street. We had some crazy couple of days.

Scared to go to the vet

The doctor prescribed her 3 different types of medicine I had to give her 2x per day. It was a struggle to make her swallow the pills, but I did it. With some minor war scars from the battles. 😉 Now she is healing, trying to gain her strength. Once she gets better, we are going to get her the main vaccinations and probably neutered too. There are far too many street cats in Cairo, there is simply no need to produce more little ones.

She’s obviously a girl

I have already spent like half of my month’s budget on her. Had to get everything from a litter box and cage to vaccinations. And to be honest, she has taken up a lot of my free time and energy. I feel like I have a child at home. My friend asked me if it’s too much and I am thinking of taking her back to the street but I said no way. She is my responsibility now and I have to take care of her. After I leave Cairo, I plan to find her another nice home with lovely owners to take care of her. Unless I get too attached and take her to Europe with me. 😉

  2. Ma võiks vist terve pika jutu kirjutada sellest julmusest. Alustades hobuste piitsutamisest, et need autodega sama kiirelt liiguks, eeslite 20cm keti otsas pidamisest kuni kasside õhtusöögiks püüdmisega

    1. Omg, mida?
